Josh:
That is a very good question. I was looking in our manuals for our machines and did not find anything that addresses calibration. However, I do believe this is addressed in the B89 standard. I think it is just like a caliper, mic, etc., periodic. Based on use and historical data you should determine the best time cycle for your operations. I think annual is just an implied starting point that everyone accepts. I have heard of and am currently planning a system to evaluate our machines. It is basically a monthly volumetric and linear check. The information will be recorded and a chart created/updated upon completion. When a negative trend is noticed the OEM will be contacted to perform a full calibration and error correction. This is just a plan so far and I have a lot of work left to implement this, but I think it is a good way to determine the current status of your machine as well as to determine a calibration frequency you will have complete confidence in.
