We use this six sigma tool all the time. I use control charts to check the machines repeatability and document it for capability studies. This is often how we locate measurement error before the problems gets to big, allowing use to fine to our frequencies to stay with the cmm's standards. There is an excellent software program out there called JMP, it makes the use of control charts (X and R bar) very easy. Check it out at http:\\www.JMPdiscovery.com They have demo down loads and excellent tech support.
As for the use in calibration you would have to be more ex-plaintive on how you want to use them.
