It has been my experience that books are wonderful to clarify a basic understanding, but you are stuck when you don't understand. To put it simply, a book can not explain something to you that it says and you do not understand. That is not to say I disagree with any of the earlier postings. To the contrary I think you should have a copy of ANSI Y14.5M-1994 Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ANSI Y14.5M-1994 Mathematical Definitions of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles (both available from ASME " http://www.asme.org/ ")and a text book from a reputable source such as Lowell Foster or William Tandler. The most beneficial step you could take, in my opinion, is a course that covers this vast, confusing topic. Most colleges offer courses or you can take one through Multi Metrics, Brown and Sharpe, Mitutoyo, etc. If you get confused or lost in a class you have an expert (if they are ASME certified) in the topic to help you. If I had not sat through William Tandlers course, I would still have my nose stuck in a book trying to learn. Just my two cents. Best of luck!
