The use of ‘Smileys’ on hard gauging systems has proved itself to be a quick and easy way of telling machine operators if the part(s) measured are in specification. A simple to use QUINDOS command has been written which automatically creates either a ‘Smiley’ or a ‘Grumpy’ on the CMM screen, depending on whether any of the features are in/out of specification. The advantages are obvious. No matter how many parts are measured, the result is unambiguous, and the operator does not need to waste time searching through the hard-copy report for features which are out of specification.
