From my experience for KUM to work on a 3D surface you need a nominal path (VDA format) to proper measurments to be made. However using third party software you can take a file from the Zeiss KUM program and offset the surface the radius of the probe tip. I just picked up a software package called "Rapid Form" which I use with laser digitizing equipment. I plan to try bring in a point cloud from my Zeiss (ball center data) and offset the surface using the software. If you want to talk more you can email me at "eabryce@sandia.gov".
