Topic: Controlling retract in tight places

Using LKDMIS and CAMIO, I am trying to program an area that is very narrow. I only have about .020 Clearance on either side of my probe when I drive into the exact center of this slot. It seems as though no matter how small I set the 'retract(SBAK) approach and Clearance distance', the machine will move to far off the surface to be measured and crash the back side of the probe into the opposing surface of the slot. I have a native DEA/SPectrum program that will check this surface just fine. I also have a Valisys program that runs on the exact LK CMM that I'm trying to program using CAMIO. I could move to a smaller probe, but the fact still remains that I seem to be unable to control the CMM well enough to keep it from crashing. Any ideas?
TIA
