Richard - I have not had the experience you described but I have noticed that the overtravel distance is considerably shorter when trying to probe in the -Z with a TP7. If the stylus shank is not short and stiff the stylus will deflect prior to taking the hit causing errant readings. I have used it to measure the top of a groove land before and found this to be true.
