Yes you could. In fact using a step gauge as a final test would be ok. For the initial test, it is best to keep the variables to a minimum. In this particular case, because there was the possibility of a probing or a reader problem or maybe something not yet thought of, it is best to separate the possible contributing factors. Measuring a step gauge would entail the count, dynamic probing system and a coordinate system other then machine. The position of the gauge could also add a variable.
