Here are my two cents! I took what used to be called the ASQC certified mechanical inspector exam. This was way back in 1988. The test was 100 questions (multi-guess) and I felt about half the questions were worthwhile. The certification I got at the time had no expiration.

Concerning the ASME test for GD&T. I have spoken with two who have taken the test (there are two levels) and both told me the exam was a test of how well you know the standard (word for word)and not how the standard is used. Because of this I have decided not to take the test.

I hope that ASQ decides to offer a GD&T certification.
