I would like to extend an invitation from Bill Tandler for those of you who would like to learn more about his input on the matter of establishing a datum structure. I sent him Calvin's input, Bill's reply follows:

Hello Geoff!

Thanks for your inquiry. I can answer it in the fullest detail and would like to help. I have developed a full set of rules for DRF (Datum Reference Frame) construction most of which, it appears, will be incorporated into the next issue of the standard. I also wrote most of the algorithms for the CMM software system GEOMET, and so have insights from behind the scenes, which might interest you.

Since you are so keenly interested, I would suggest a most fortuitous opportunity to learn all this first hand in the three day course I am giving under the auspices of Ford Motor at their Dearborn Fairlane Training facility, November 12-14. Please see the enclosed attachment for details. There are still openings and you would be most welcome. If not, you might be interested in purchasing some of our materials dealing with this.

Regards,

Bill Tandler

Mr. William Tandler,

I now come to you, a specialist in the field of GD&T, searching for a valid interpretation of the ASME Y14M Standard with regard to establishing a datum structure. My efforts in pursuit of a reply from the ASME brought me in contact with Engineer Mr. Calvin Gomez. I am in acceptance with his opinion. However, my expectations for the ASME to include his interpretation into the Y14M Standard remains to be undisclosed. Would you please offer your time to review his reply to my enquiry on 08/24/01 and reveal your thoughts on the issue. I am most interested in whether or not you concur with Calvin's conclusions based on the information he received from the committee. Please see the
attached file.
