This was addressed in the DMIS 4.0 standard ANSI/CAM-I 104.0-2001 Part 1 page 203 with the addition of var3 which allows the ijk orientation vector of the sphere to be defined. Also, var8 was added which allows a user to specify the measurable portion of the sphere.

The addition of ijk and angle was primarily to support AUTO measurement of SPHERE features.

Section 5.3.2.2 (page 40) also states that a SPHERE can reduce to a center point. I believe this implies XYZ only.
