I currently use Virtual DMIS as the front end user interface. It has the capability to save measured features and coordinate systems in a data base. As long as that data base is not corrupted I can go back to the program and create new coordinate systems or features from the the features in the data base.
In a previous system of DMIS that we used this was not possible as none of the features were saved. So to answer your question it depends on the user interface that you are using.
