OK, You'll have to excuse me for being the proverbial pain in the butt..... But I have found what what I was looking for and it may or may not apply in Bill's case. Back to Foster's Geo_Metrics III book. I will quote from page 76 concerning the use of modifiers for profile tolerancing.
"Where a datum reference is used, it is usually intended to apply RFS. However, there may be unique applications permitting the use of an MMC datum to expedite gaging provided there is no detrimental effect on the design requirement." Would this statement also apply to the CMM measurement? I don't know but am going to try and find out.
