I know that Surfer is being ported into NT, and I think it has been released, although I am not absolutely sure. As noted, it was a powerful product used to generate a point cloud, and then construct the appropriate surfaces out of the cloud. This approach is a common approach in reverse engineering. Also as noted, support on its old VMS platform was not particularly good. I suspect that it will be better under NT, but even on this operating system, as a niche product, it is not likely to have a huge market. For example, I know of only one user in the NE quarter of the United States.

In reverse engineering, there are two problems. Generating the points, and constructing the surfaces. There are a number of options that perform one of these tasks but not the other (which means you may have to spend more to cover both activities), and there are also some other options that do both.

Bottom line, if you need to do a lot of reverse engineering, it's worth looking into.
