Actually, you can't delete a user. The system deletes users that have not visited the forum for over a year - that is how you could get a message where the author is "deleted user".

You can only delete messages that you have created, so no damage done there.

BTW - you can edit your user profile to reverse message ordering so the most recent threads are at the top of each conference, if you wish.
